| WELCOME TO ROYALS RENDEZVOUS - THE 1871 CLUB The Royals Rendezvous – the 1871 Club was formed over the Christmas-New Year period of 2010-2011. Many of its initial members were regular contributors to the BBC 606 service – alas, no longer in operation – who wished for a more specialized Reading FC orientated forum, whilst maintaining the good spirited type of conversation and banter that the BBC tried to promote. Over 500 members, over 70,000 posts is proof enough of the growing role of this specialist Reading FC fans forum web site. Just wondering what everyone thinks of our sponsorship with Waitrose? It has another year on it, and being honest I think it’s been excellent. They’re based in Bracknell? So local(ish), they are a ‘nice’ company. Both Reading and Waitrose do a lot of work in supporting the community, share similar brand values and a clean image. We are viewed as a 'middle class club' by many fans, having Waitrose as a sponsor won't do anything to deny that, but I don't see the issue. If anything it feels like a natural fit to me. You might have seen Waitrose took out a full page spread in the Sunday Times to congratulate us on winning the league, similar to when they wished us good luck in the same tabloid before the Playoff final at Wembley. How many other sponsors do you see doing anything like that? ![]() Plus I really liked the white / green away kit in 2009/10. Would be happy to see the green incorporated into away kids as a recurrent thing. It may not be a massive financial package but with Anton running things, I'm sure not everything is about the money all the time. Someone said to me we needed a big global brand like Samsung. Why? I personally think we’ve got a great sponsor here, they’ve shown a bit of class and I don’t see the any problems with their logo on our kits. I for one would welcome seeing them extend beyond 2012/13. |

Totally agree with you mate and being part of the John Lewis brand, they're a pretty big UK company with lots of kudos. |

It's a nice touch and they do seem to be more interested in us than most sponsors but if we're serious about challenging for Europe and with the Financial fair play we'll need as much money as we can get, that may end being Waitrose but if not I think we'll get someone new. |

That is where I was coming from saying a bigger sponsor IE : Samsung. Waitrose haven't got the financial backing if we were to try challenge for the top places in a few years time. Don't get me wrong I like Waitrose as a sponsor but they're not going to offer as much money as other available sponsors. I loved the green kit though, that was good. I wish they'd bring it back. |

Aaah, I see your point on Financial Fair Play. I don't think at the moment we're really in a position to be looking at Global brands, are we? Plus there must be plenty of ways of getting every last penny into the club if we need to worry in those terms. Looking through our history of sponsors, Reading Chronicle, Radio 210, Courage, HAT Painting, Auto Trader, Westcoast, Kyocera, Waitrose. We've got the biggest sponsor we've had historically? Fits in with the ethos of the clubs and seems hands on/bothered. |

Samsung sponsor Swindon. As does FIFA 12. Football Manager sponsors AFC Wimbledon? There are quite a few in lower leagues that have attracted decent sponsors - obviously the amount they'd be paid wouldn't be as much but still goes to show. |

Football Manager? That's a laughable sponsor. You have to remember in itself Waitrose is only the food division of the John Lewis Partnership, 270+ stores nationwide, holds a 'Royal Warrant' for supplying to the Queen and Prince Charles, is rapidly expanding (long-term goal of opening 400 branches across the UK by 2017 and doubling its revenue to £8bn by 2016). Predominently South East/London but expanding. If you look into the partnership wider then group was the third largest UK private company in the Sunday Times Top Track 100 for 2010, are lauded for their partnership scheme (particularly the annual bonus) and how they treat their employees. Turnover and revenue retained increases year on year, but without the international aspect I see what you're saying about finances. Do we know what we are actually being paid though? I've seen talk about them potentially being priced out if/when we reach the Premier League, but as far as we know what we are getting may be comparable when considered in line with income/turnover to that of larger clubs. |

I would prefer to keep it as Waitrose, but would just ask for more money! (a touch naive of me perhaps) Kyocera is arguably a bigger name than Waitrose - though I only say that because I saw a massive Kyocera sign in Hong Kong. It's more of a world-wide brand, I'd say. |
