WELCOME TO ROYALS RENDEZVOUS - THE 1871 CLUB

The Royals Rendezvous – the 1871 Club was formed over the Christmas-New Year period of 2010-2011. Many of its initial members were regular contributors to the BBC 606 service – alas, no longer in operation – who wished for a more specialized Reading FC orientated forum, whilst maintaining the good spirited type of conversation and banter that the BBC tried to promote.

In its first two years of existence, the Royals Rendezvous is achieving outstanding success, with new members signing up continuously, and the member base itself extremely active. Over 500 members, over 70,000 posts is proof enough of the growing role of this specialist Reading FC fans forum web site. It is already recognized in other sporting circles as a major source of news and fan interaction (especially that related to Reading Football club of course), and has a strong and enthusiastic moderation team.

Royals Rendezvous has also developed fine relations with many other specialist football forums, especially with teams of our own league.

Reading FC & Neighbouring Teams Form

Most Reading fans, in the business end of the season, were dreading having to travel to Birmingham needing points, a cruel sense of deja vu returning from the final day of the 2008/2009 season, when City dropped us into the playoffs with a final day defeat. But two games this week removed any fear of a disappointing end to a fantastic season, with the Royals sealing automatic promotion on Tuesday, and sealing the championship on Saturday, with thanks to Middlesborough for defeating second placed Southampton. The game against Nottingham Forest wasn't the best game, especially looking at league placings alone. But the "extra man" really counted that night - of course I am referring to number 13, the fans. Even listening to the commentary on the radio, you could hear from the fans how the West Ham game at Ashton Gate was going, a game which we were dependant on, hoping we could get more points than the Hammers. Whether the players could hear it or not was debatable, up until the last ten minutes. Due to our match starting slightly later, news that West Ham had only drawn echoed around the stands and, within minutes, a Reading team full of ambition managed to score through our hard working ball winner Mikele Leigertwood. A larger scoreline would have been nice, but the three points was enough to secure promotion. The Saturday game, against Palace, seemed like a bit of an anti-climax, even more so because, even if we won, we would need to wait until later on to see how Southampton did to confirm the title. A good game nonetheless, we were undone by the pacey Wilfried Zaha, before equalising and overtaking with Gorkss winning a game of heading tennis and Le Fondre continuing his saviour act, before a late second goal from Palace meant we shared the points. However, a shock loss for the Saints meant that, last evening, Reading FC could celebrate a second Championship title in six years.

Below the top spot, Southampton could only manage three points out of a possible six this week, keeping them in second place, and having to rely on West Ham United to drop points against Leicester City on Monday to secure their automatic promotion before the final day of the season. Blackpool, on the other hand, have taken maximum points from their week, securing their play-off spot this season. Birmingham City and Cardiff City face a battle with Middlesborough to get those last two places in the playoffs, and a chance to join the top two in the Premiership next season.

With Coventry City losing to bottom placed, and already relegated Doncaster Rovers, and Portsmouth dropping points to Derby County, the other two relegation places were confirmed yesterday, with Barnsley and Nottingham Forest able to breath a sigh of relief for the final day of the season, knowing they will stay up for next season.

Not much to say now for the end of the season. A trip to Birmingham will be a nice day out for us, although we can be sure City will be chasing a win to secure their play-off spot. Middlesborough and Cardiff will also be battling hard but, for other teams, there is nothing else to play for. I hope we can give the Championship a good send off. Most of our players have come from the Football League, and we have used their experience to get where we are. Now we need to see how that experience does us at a higher level. See you next week!

I think Crystal Palace were helped by an extra player and another 'extra man', the referee. Still, was funny booing John Parr every time he touched the ball, crowd were rocking after Alfie scored the second, though we were silenced by Murray's wonder goal. And Pompey finally go down, many years of happiness in League's One and Two await them.

Yeah about that I am relying on West Ham United to lose tomorrow night, but it could go to the last day. I'm sure Coventry could use some comic relief given they will be playing in L1 next season.
