WELCOME TO ROYALS RENDEZVOUS - THE 1871 CLUB

The Royals Rendezvous – the 1871 Club was formed over the Christmas-New Year period of 2010-2011. Many of its initial members were regular contributors to the BBC 606 service – alas, no longer in operation – who wished for a more specialized Reading FC orientated forum, whilst maintaining the good spirited type of conversation and banter that the BBC tried to promote.

In its first two years of existence, the Royals Rendezvous is achieving outstanding success, with new members signing up continuously, and the member base itself extremely active. Over 500 members, over 70,000 posts is proof enough of the growing role of this specialist Reading FC fans forum web site. It is already recognized in other sporting circles as a major source of news and fan interaction (especially that related to Reading Football club of course), and has a strong and enthusiastic moderation team.

Royals Rendezvous has also developed fine relations with many other specialist football forums, especially with teams of our own league.

You’re currently viewing our forum as a guest. This means you are limited to certain areas of the board and there are many features you cannot use.

However, if you are a fan of another team you are currently allowed to post in “Rivals, but Friends” and the "Other Matches" sections, strictly abiding by the language decency standards that Royals Rendezvous maintains. No aggressive posts, wind-ups or swearing or the post will be edited/deleted. But please read on....

Stadium Plan

and the West Ham area of London:

A short note about the ground
The Boleyn Stadium is more commonly referred to as 'Upton Park'. On the whole the stadium is an impressive one, being of a good size and having three modern stands. The capacity is a little over 35,000 and all seated. On one side of the ground is the impressive looking Dr Martens West Stand that was opened in 2001. This large two tiered stand (which is reputedly the largest league ground stand in London), has a capacity of 15,000). Located between the tiers are two rows of corporate executive boxes. Opposite is the East Stand, which was opened in 1969. This stand in comparison, although two tiered, is rather on the small side and looks somewhat out of place compared to its larger shiny neighbours. Both ends are large, smart, two tiered stands. In the North East and South West corners there are video screens installed as well as an electronic score board in the South West corner. Also in the South West corner is a large image of Booby Moore who overlooks the ground.

Probably the most striking feature of the stadium can only be seen externally, where an elaborate facade comprising of two castle turrets has been built around the reception area entrance. The turrets have been modeled on those appearing on the club crest. It is nice to see a Club actually trying to instill some character into a new stand. Just outside the ground near the Boleyn Pub, is the handsome statue of England Captain Bobby Moore, holding aloft the World Cup Trophy which England won in 1966. The statue shows Moore being hoisted aloft by fellow West Ham players Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters with Everton defender Ray Wilson.

FORM GUIDE

Table Positions:
Reading 2nd - 73 points (played 39 games)
West Ham 3rd - 72 points (played 39 games)
(West Ham’s mid-week game has been edited in...)

West Ham Recent form:
Apparently good form, but further investigation shows they are dropping far too many 'silly' points through so many draws. They have indeed had very good wins against Cardiff and Blackpool away, and a respectable draw against fellow rivals Southampton, but then drop two points to each of Burnley, Doncaster and Watford, for example. The Tuesday Peterborough match ended as an away Hammers victory - and by most reports a fairly comfortable win too, impressive if you consider that the Posh scored three against Reading just 10 days previously.

Reading Recent form:
The long term pattern shows only 3 defeats in 19 league games – and 15 have been wins! The slight worries of a wobble following the Peterborough away loss two games ago have been largely blown aside with a comfortable victory 3-1 against promotion-chasing Blackpool last weekend.

Recent form table – last 8 games:
Southampton and Reading are way, way ahead of everyone at the top of the current form table with Saints currently on 22 points, and Reading with a W6 D1 L1 reading currently on 19 points. Then come Nottm Forest, Ipswich and Watford on a mere 14! West Ham, although undefeated, are only in 12th place due to so many draws – their sequence reads: W2 D6 L0. Barnsley, Bristol City and Portsmouth languish at the bottom, but at least each has one victory in eight.

Current Manager of West Ham: Sam Allardyce
Samuel "Sam" Allardyce (born 19 October 1954), nicknamed "Big Sam", is an English football manager and former professional player. In June 2011 he was appointed as manager of West Ham United. As a footballer he made over 400 appearances and played for Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Millwall, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Coventry City, Huddersfield Town, Preston North End, West Bromwich Albion and Limerick. Moving into management he took charge of Limerick, Blackpool and Notts County before managing Bolton Wanderers from 1999 to 2007. Commonly known as Big Sam, he led Bolton to a League Cup final as well as guiding them to UEFA Cup qualification for the first time in their history.
Following a spell at Newcastle United from 2007 to 2008, Allardyce managed Blackburn Rovers from 2008 until 13 December 2010. Allardyce is the subject of a popular spoof Twitter account "The Big Sam". He is certainly under enormous pressure to deliver at West Ham – they are the Championship biggest spenders, even outgunning Leicester, so it is probably the case or “promotion or bust”!

Future Ground Developments for West Ham?
West Ham's intention to leave Upton Park and move to the new London Olympic Stadium in Stratford, East London, has received a setback. This is because the Olympic Park Legacy Committee have announced that the stadium is to now remain in public ownership. This effectively means that the previous agreement with West Ham to takeover the stadium is now no longer valid and a new bidding process will be undertaken to find tenants for the stadium after the games have ended.
West Ham are among four bidders seeking to become tenants at the Olympic Stadium after the London 2012 Games. The Championship club had looked set to move into the venue but a deal with Newham Council collapsed in October. Sixteen parties expressed an interest when the tender process was announced, but only four submitted proposals, and Leyton Orient – originally interested - are not among them. Hammers vice-chairman Karren Brady said any move was conditional on the stadium being "fit for world-class football".
The stadium which is currently being built, will have its 80,000 capacity reduced to 60,000 after the games have finished in 2012, will also retain its athletics running track. It will cost around £95m to convert the stadium for long term use, such as the provision of a permanent roof and corporate hospitality facilities. If things go to plan, then West Ham could be kicking off in their new home for the start of the 2013/14 season.
Why did Orient pull out then? Leyton Orient chairman Barry Hearn confirmed that his club had not applied for tenancy and that West Ham using the stadium will be "disastrous" for the O's. "This stadium is going to kill the area and kill our football club," Hearn said. "The stadium is a magnificent athletics stadium, it's just not built for football," he said. "The pitch is 40 to 50 yards away from the front row of seats and I personally find that abhorrent for football. Football grounds have steep stands but this one doesn't. The view from the lower tier is dreadful. It's not a white elephant. It's a white elephant that they're trying to make into a pink flamingo. If you're talking about atmosphere, then forget it. This represents a quantum change in the experience of a football punter and frankly it could be the demise of West Ham if they move there. It's a huge slap in the face to their fans and their history."

The Olympic Stadium – as it should be in the future!

Do you know about West Ham – the place?
West Ham is in the London Borough of Newham in London, England. In the west it is a post-industrial neighbourhood next to the site of the London Olympic Park and in the east it is mostly residential, consisting of Victorian terraced housing interspersed with higher density post-War social housing. The area has been one of the most deprived in the country and as part of the New Deal for Communities programme it forms, with neighbouring Plaistow, a regeneration area.
How did it start? A settlement in the area named Ham is first recorded as Hamme in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 958 and then in the 1086 Domesday Book as Hame. The earliest recorded use of West Ham, as distinct from East Ham, is in 1186 as Westhamma. It is formed from Old English 'hamm' and means 'a dry area of land between rivers or marshland', referring the location of the settlement within boundaries formed by the rivers Lea, Thames and Roding and their marshes.
Following the opening of the first railway station in the area in 1839 at Stratford, the focus of activity shifted northwards towards the fast-expanding Stratford, with the original settlement diminishing in significance. In 1840 the parish was included in the Metropolitan Police District and soon after the built-up area of London had encompassed West Ham. West Ham is located 6.1 miles (9.8 km) east of Charing Cross. West Ham station on Manor Road is served by the London Underground Jubilee, Hammersmith and City and District lines; the National Rail c2c services; and from 2010 the Docklands Light Railway. Plaistow and Stratford stations are also close by.
West Ham F.C. have played at the Boleyn Ground in nearby Upton Park since 1904. The West Ham Stadium, a football, greyhound racing and speedway stadium, operated between 1928 and 1972, with a capacity of 120,000. While football is probably the main focus for the community, there is quite a lot of interest in other sports—with rugby being one of them. Next to West Ham station, on Holland Road, is the home of 3 rugby teams, all playing in Essex RFU leagues: Phantoms RFC, King's Cross Steelers and East London RFC.

WEB SITES

Unofficial Web Sites – daib0’s suggestion/s:
Sorry, I am not able to recommend one as such, though each individual is welcome to try for themselves. My experiences are either not being authorized after completing the signing-up process, or joining successfully but then having (first) posts with aggressive comments rammed back ... better to preach discretion so no names!

OPPOSING FANS SECTION

Rivalries:
Opposing fans are not at all agreed but in the case of West Ham, with Millwall there has always been a staunch dislike, as are Spurs and Chelsea. Leyton Orient, Charlton and Gillingham all cite West Ham as rivals .. but not really reciprocated. Funnily enough too, in a massive survey done in 2003 by “Football Fan Census” West ham had temporarily shot up in the Reading fans rivals list to 3rd place, but this came as a result of the then hot Pardew affair at that time – West Ham are hardly considered a rivalry for Reading today, though neither is there much friendliness between the two!

Famous Fans:
Quite an assorted mix of celebrities who support or have supported West Ham in their free time – here goes:
Chris Akabusi - Athlete, Nick Berry - Simon Wicks, Eastenders, Frank Bruno -retired boxer, Lennox Lewis - World Champion Boxer, Martin Brundle – former F1 driver, now commentator, Todd Carty - Mark Fowler, John Cleese - comedian & actor (Basil Fawlty), Noel Edmonds - Tele Addicts, David Essex - Singer, Perry Fenwick - Billy Mitchell, Graham Gooch - Retired Cricketer, Leslie Grantham - Dirty Den, Lee Hurst - Comedian, Kiera Knightly – actress, Phil Jupitous - Comedian, Ross Kemp - Grant Mitchell, Matt Lorenzo - Sky Sports, Jo O'Meara - S Club, Ray Winstone – actor, Phil Collem – guitarist (Def Leppard), and Steve Harris – bassist (Iron Maiden).

On a previous West Ham Match Thread we had a photo of Frank Bruno, so this time it’s appropriate to feature Lennox Lewis who ALSO happens to be a Hammers fan!

NICKNAMES ETC.
The Hammers is the big one, used by almost all - Although this may initially appear to be based on a simple shortening of the name, observation of the club's crest will reveal crossed metalworking hammers, indicating the club's origins as the football team of Thames Ironworks. By the same token “Irons” is also occasionally heard. West Ham fans don’t like to hear it, but contrary fans today often refer to “Hamsters” (a play on words on their ‘official’ nickname) and “Wet Sham” (again a play on words on the team name) – obviously both not advised to be shouted within the West Ham stadium itself!

MATCH DAY EXPECTATIONS

Attendances:
It is a pleasure to report that West Ham are the only Championship club to average more than 30,000 a home game – currently standing at exactly 30,500 entrance. That is over 4,000 per home game better than Derby in 2nd place, and it represents a percentage of capacity of 85.5% - only bettered by Brighton but who have a much smaller ground. By the way, Reading have consolidated 10th place in attendance listings, and are barely 200 average of Hull one place higher ...

Squads and Team News:
Not available yet - please add any news in your posts and comments - one of the most important things to add here before kick-off!

SCORE PREDICTIONS

My own verdict:
I feel we’ll get a win, though any outcome is possible at this stage of the season and seeing what rides on it. But I believe the Reading mentality will keep control of the situation, so:
West Ham 0 Reading 2 (HT 0-1).

For most of your predictions see:
http://royalsrendezvous.co.uk/topic/9470761/1
- Please do ADD your prediction on this special link, which counts for the RR Prediction Game 2011-12, being organized by RoyalJoe - couldn't be easier, and you'll have some fun, so try it even at this stage of the season ! If you don’t fancy participating in the game, but still would like to give a one-off score prediction, just leave any prediction on this Match thread itself (we don’t take these into account ...)

What do others say?
The Oddschecker site, listing nearly all the major betting companies, shows West Ham favoured for a home win despite “iffy” home form; they are at about 13/10. You’ll find odds for a Reading victory at about 12/5, and a draw at nearly 5/1 ... this last one sounds a fair bet to me ...

Reading FC SUPERSTITIONS
THIS DATE in history! Reading have played 15 times on this day , with an ordainary showing of W4 D6 L5. We have had two whopping 5-0 victories though, against Tranmere (H) in 1976 (who can still remember THAT Robin Friday goal, probably the greatest ever by a Reading player!) and much farther back against Q.P.R. (H) in 1934. No bad defeats either. We haven’t played on this date in over a decade, but last time out was a 2-1 home victory v Notts County (goals by Butler and Cureton).
How do West Ham fare on this day? They have played 19 times and frankly have a good reading: W11 D4 L4 and have scored nearly 40 goals too. Best victories ever were two 5-1 wallopings: against Fulham (H) in 1934 and against Palace (A) in 1923. Last game on this date was in 2007, and a 2-0 premier victory at home to Middlesbrough (goals from Zamora and Tévez).

Afobe learns from the best
Reading loanee Benik Afobe credits input from Robin van Persie for helping mould him as a striker. The England youth international, borrowed by the Royals from Arsenal, has revealed how the Dutch star has become something of a role model to him during his formative years at the north London club. And now the 19-year-old is hoping to use van Persie's expertise to make a significant impression in the npower Championship.
"Robins speaks to me a lot and it was nice for him to look after me when I was injured," Afobe told the Reading Post. "He always tells me to think about my finishing before the game. That way, when you get to the game situation you don't start panicking and you know exactly what you're going to do. It's about being clever. When you're training with the likes of van Persie, as well as the defensive players, you realise how good they are and what stage you want to be at. As a youngster I'm always learning and it's the best thing for me to be playing with them. The best thing from now until April 28 would be to help Reading get promoted, and it would be a nice thing to have on my CV."

Football 365
Big Sam sets sights on second - Sam Allardyce admits the next week can catapult West Ham right back into the automatic promotion race in the Championship.
The Hammers play their game in hand at Peterborough on Tuesday night before a crunch clash against second-placed Reading at Upton Park on Saturday. Allardyce's side are unbeaten in their last 10 matches, although seven of those were draws including the 2-2 draw at Burnley at the weekend. "If I get a performance like that I'm sure we can win," said the Hammers boss. "We deserved a win on Saturday so let's make sure we get it on Tuesday. Then we play Reading on Saturday and that's our chance to get back into second spot.”

More on Hammers game tomorrow:

Football 365
Peterborough v West Ham preview
Peterborough captain Grant McCann remains a slight concern. McCann will have his troublesome calf checked again before his place against one of his former clubs is confirmed. The midfielder was also a doubt to face Barnsley at the weekend and came off after an hour of the 1-0 defeat at Oakwell. Posh boss Darren Ferguson described that loss as 'inept' and 'unacceptable' and expects a response against the title-chasing Hammers but he must decide whether to make changes or give those players concerned a chance to redeem themselves. Any changes would be the first in five matches. Defender Mark Little, midfielder Daniel Kearns and strikers David Ball and Emile Sinclair are among the options for Ferguson.
West Ham will check on Julien Faubert, Ricardo Vaz Te and Abdoulaye Faye. Faubert has been out for four matches with a groin problem and fellow winger Vaz Te has missed the last three due to a hamstring injury, but both are close to returning. Centre-half Faye was a late withdrawal from the 2-2 draw at Burnley after picking up a knock in training on Friday but the problem is not serious and he could return. Winston Reid is still unavailable after suffering concussion playing for New Zealand and fellow defender Guy Demel remains sidelined with a thigh problem. Midfielder Papa Bouba Diop is also recovering from a thigh injury and misses out again.

Hammers skipper demands Posh win - West Ham United captain targets Peterborough win after Burnley draw
West Ham United captain Kevin Nolan insists his side have to get a win at Peterborough tomorrow after being held by Burnley. The Hammers slipped further behind in the race for an automatic promotion place after they drew 2-2 at Turf Moor. Nolan, who netted his tenth of the season, told the club website: "We conceded two sloppy goals, but at the other end we should have been banging them in. At least we battled back to get a draw, so we go to Peterborough now and we've got to win. "There is a long way to go and a lot of points to play for and we're still fighting and chomping at the bit to make sure we get what we want and that's automatic promotion."

Are the cracks beginning to appear??

Forever West Ham
Give the kid a break, Sam
Article starts
: Sam Allardyce has been quoted by The People giving Ravel Morrison a very public warning about his behaviour. To me, this was the wrong thing to do. I really think he should let the former Manchester United youngster show what he can do on the pitch and give him the chance to show what he’s made of.

KUMB
Strike force zero
West Ham United's strikers have managed to score just 20 goals between them all season - that's EIGHT less than the Championship's leading goalscorer on his own. Much has been made of West Ham's misfiring forwards this season, with Carlton Cole in particular having come under fire for failing to hit double figures despite having scored four more than his closest rival, Sam Baldock.
In stark contrast, Southampton's Ricky Lambert - who currently tops the league's goalscoring charts - has hit 28 this season.
Or the remaining forwards to find the back of the net Sam Allardyce's side this term, John Carew and Freddie Piquionne - currently on loan at Doncaster - have a pair each, whilst recent signing Nicky Maynard and Frank Nouble - currently at Barnsley - have one each. The only West Ham player to reach double figures thus far this season is captain Kevin Nolan, who scored his tenth of the campaign aganst Burnley at the weekend - thus makng him the first midfielder to reach double figures since Frank Lampard scored 14 goals in the 1999/2000 season some 12 years previously.

Sporting Life
Nolan Hopes For Change Of Luck
West Ham captain Kevin Nolan is targeting successive wins this week in order to put the club's bid for promotion to the Premier League back on track. The Hammers have drawn their last five Championship games to slip down to third and four points adrift of second-placed Reading. However, back-to-back victories over Peterborough United and Reading would lift West Ham back into the automatic slots and Nolan is staying confident.
"The lads remain upbeat and there's still all to play for," said the midfielder after Saturday's 2-2 draw at Burnley. “We knew this would be a tough season and accept we should have won some of the games that have ended all-square. Of course we are disappointed we did not win this one. We started well but we got punished for it. The gaffer told us not to panic when we were 2-0 down. He made a few tactical changes and told us to tighten up. We need to change our luck but if we win our next two games against Peterborough on Tuesday and Reading at the weekend we could be in second place again by Saturday."

Something to me really interesting - the SAME stage in 2005-2006. We didn't realize at that moment how easy we had it then!!

See Preston going very well, plus Luton and Plymouth comfortable in mid-table, Southampton and Brighton really struggling!!
