WELCOME TO ROYALS RENDEZVOUS - THE 1871 CLUB

The Royals Rendezvous – the 1871 Club was formed over the Christmas-New Year period of 2010-2011. Many of its initial members were regular contributors to the BBC 606 service – alas, no longer in operation – who wished for a more specialized Reading FC orientated forum, whilst maintaining the good spirited type of conversation and banter that the BBC tried to promote.

In its first two years of existence, the Royals Rendezvous is achieving outstanding success, with new members signing up continuously, and the member base itself extremely active. Over 500 members, over 70,000 posts is proof enough of the growing role of this specialist Reading FC fans forum web site. It is already recognized in other sporting circles as a major source of news and fan interaction (especially that related to Reading Football club of course), and has a strong and enthusiastic moderation team.

Royals Rendezvous has also developed fine relations with many other specialist football forums, especially with teams of our own league.

Review


Qualifying

Qualifying in Malaysia ended with Lewis Hamilton claiming a second pole grid position in as many races, with team mate Jensen Button a close second, making Michael Schumacher having to accept third place. The Red Bull team took 4th and 5th place, with Webber ahead of Vettel on harder tyres. Other news had Kimi Raikkonen starting 10th after having a 5-place penalty for a gearbox change between the first two GPs.


Race

While the weather in England has been unusually good this weekend, F1 had to endure a heavy shower in Malaysia. All but one team decided to begin the race on Intermediate tyres, but Perez takes the gamble on Lap 2 to change to Wet tyres. Michael Schumacher has a tough start, spinning out in the first lap before regaining his race, but dropping down from a 3rd place start to as low as 15th. Grosjean, the cause of the Schumacher spin after the first turn, has dropped from a starting 7th to 18th, and finally becomes the first retirement. With the rain continuing to fall, the race was red-flagged, meaning the cars had to line up on the grid in their current positions to wait for the restart, after only just nine laps.

The race restarted after 45 minutes of waiting, with cars opting to change to Wet tyres to handle the extreme weather conditions. Sergio Perez had moved up to third place by the time the restart came, from a starting grid of 10th, again showing his skill continuing from Australia last week. By this time, the rain had stopped, and the drivers were told to expect no more rain, but, with the delay, whether the race could be finished or not in the allotted time was the issue.

With the restart, Jensen took the gamble of pitting immediately to change onto Intermediate tyres before anyone else, and was rewarded with becoming the fastest car on the track soon after. Hamilton followed suit, but a longer pit stop caused him to lose his pole position, dropping to third. Alonso also pits for new tyres, while Perez, in his usual fashion, remains out on his Wet tyres to keep his position. Alonso takes the lead, with Perez close behind, and Hamilton dropping to almost six seconds behind the Mexican. Amazingly, Jensen Button, having pitted first and seemingly having the advantage, knocked into the back of HRT driver Karthikeyan, losing his endplate and forcing another pitstop to fix his car. This accident pushed him back to 20th position, and faced him with a difficult challenge to reach a points-position.

Alonso managed to get four seconds ahead of Perez at pole, but Hamilton struggled to keep up with the top two, with his tyres not able to heat up on the still-wet track. Rosberg and Vettell trailed the podium three at this point, while Jensen Button continued to have issues on his Wet tyres, remaining in 20th position as they headed toward the halfway mark of the race. The next big news was Rosberg losing his 5th position to Kimi Raikkonen, with Mark Webber putting pressure on him straight after. And, having run out of patience with his Wet tyres, and only moving up to 18th place, Button finally pitted to go onto Intermediate tyres, the track still not safe for dry tyres.

After a good start to the race, Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne had, by the twenty eighth lap, dropped down to 10th place, facing a possible no-point finish if he didn't up his efforts, being overtaken by Massa and Hulkenberg, although he managed to regain his 9th place once again. Things remained the same in the podium positions, with Alonso now six seconds clear of Perez in second, despite the Mexican recording a fastest lap. With Massa dropping further, Vergne managed to jump up to 8th position, while Jensen Button, having made a total of four pit stops at this point, was still struggling in 19th place. Massa dropped further, all the way down to 16th place, while his team mate, Alonso, remained at the top, seven seconds ahead, with Perez nearly seven seconds ahead of 3rd placed Lewis Hamilton.

The next overtaking competition was between Massa and Button, in positions 16 and 17 respectively. After a few laps of sparring, in a manoeuvre involving Ricciardo for Toro Rosso, Button managed to claim the higher position, still on his Intermediate tyres, but with the warning of more rain to come. All teams kept on their Inter- tyres so that they could make the change to Wet if they needed to. Perez managed to close the gap between him and Alonso at pole, from six seconds to three, with Hamilton still remaining far behind. The Mexican continued to close the gap, claiming faster and faster laps as the dark clouds brewed above the race track. With no rain, however, some cars started to move onto Slick tyres, although pressure was on, with Perez close by. Massa went in, but, with a bad pit time, he lost time and dropped to 17th place. Button also pitted, still running back at 16th and not looking great for points this weekend. Hamilton managed to pit in third place without losing time. The big news was Alonso pitting before Perez, giving the Mexican a lap in pole position. The Sauber car pitted on the next lap, and came out just behind the Ferrari, dropping back down to second.

Now in the final part of the race, the rain still hadn't arrived on the track. The current competition in the top ten was with Raikkonen trying to hold onto his 6th place, ahead of Di Resta and Senna who were challenging to push ahead. Jensen Button, unfortunately, remained in 16th place and looked unlikely to gain points in this race. Alonso still in pole position, Perez now five seconds behind the Ferrari, and Hamilton, aiming for a 2nd place finish, ten seconds back, with ten laps to go. Force India team had Di Resta at 8th position and Niko Hulkenberg at 10th, but Maldonaldo for Williams was putting pressure on the last points-position. In terms of teams, Red Bull looked to profit most from this race, with Vettel and Webber in 4th and 5th respectively. But this was damaged by a left-rear puncture for Vettel, who was forced to pit just six laps from the finish line. At the same time, Perez shortened his gap from Alonso to under two seconds.

With the race coming to a conclusion, an error by Perez drew him back to a four second gap from Alonso, allowing the Spaniard to relax slightly and concentrate on retaining his pole position. Hamilton and Webber have retained their positions behind the front two, although Vettel, with his extra pit, has dropped to 12th, and was unlikely to gain points now. Maldonaldo, having been at 10th place for most of the race, faced heartbreak as he was forced to retire in the penultimate lap for the second time this season, allowing Schumacher to take his place in the last points-position. Vettel, in 11th, was forced to pull back at the end of the race, unable to salvage any points from his puncture problem. Jensen Button finished in 13th, also unable to claw his way back into the top ten after problems.


Standings

With this result, Fernando Alonso tops the championship on 35 points so far, with Lewis Hamilton a close 2nd on 30 points. Sergio Perez, now with two points-positions out of two, is on 22, and in 5th place. Button remains on 25 points, not gaining any more here, and drops to third place, while Mark Webber takes 4th with 24 points, just two ahead of Perez.

McLaren-Mercedes lead the Constructors Championships on 55 points, with Red Bull following on 32, both teams harmed by Button and Vettel unable to clinch points in Kuala Lumpur. Massa finishing outside the top ten won't affect Ferrari as Alonso's pole is enough to put them 3rd on 35. While Kobayashi hasn't helped his Sauber team mate pull points for their team, Sergio Perez's flying start to this season has put Sauber in 4th position on a modest 30 points.

I just have a passing interest in F1, but just to say a really excellent presentation! Ideal for RR - others please take note for doing the same type of things for many other sports too!

That was a great Grand Prix. Really thought Perez would get the win in those last few laps, but alas, wasn't to be. Great stuff though.

Rumours abound that Perez was held back by team orders as he drivers for Sauber Ferrari. He's also tipped to take over from Massa.

Perez was held back, they told him with about 8 laps left as he caught up to Alonso to take the 18 points for being second.

Also Ferrari supply the Sauber team with engines, so to overtake them would certainly p*** them off.

I've heard this as well, would be good for him to be with a higher profile team, he is clearly a talented driver.
