WELCOME TO ROYALS RENDEZVOUS - THE 1871 CLUB

The Royals Rendezvous – the 1871 Club was formed over the Christmas-New Year period of 2010-2011. Many of its initial members were regular contributors to the BBC 606 service – alas, no longer in operation – who wished for a more specialized Reading FC orientated forum, whilst maintaining the good spirited type of conversation and banter that the BBC tried to promote.

In its first two years of existence, the Royals Rendezvous is achieving outstanding success, with new members signing up continuously, and the member base itself extremely active. Over 500 members, over 70,000 posts is proof enough of the growing role of this specialist Reading FC fans forum web site. It is already recognized in other sporting circles as a major source of news and fan interaction (especially that related to Reading Football club of course), and has a strong and enthusiastic moderation team.

Royals Rendezvous has also developed fine relations with many other specialist football forums, especially with teams of our own league.

Away fans – if you’re coming to Reading, see our own special Royals Rendezvous Guide for Away fans – Travel and Drinks/Food :

And here’s the basic Stadium plan:

FORM GUIDE

Table Positions:
Reading 2nd - 70 points (played 38 games)
Blackpool 5th - 60 points (played 38 games)
(edited to include the mid-week games)

Reading Recent form:
Only 3 defeats in 17 games – but the last match defeat to Peterborough is what worries us. How will the lads react? Passage up from 23rd in September, 16th in November to 2nd now is great – but it has to keep going! However, things are still optimistic, taking into account the long haul from the lowly positions - last 18 games read W14 D1 L3. Many a team would settle for that in the second half of the season.

Blackpool Recent form:
Up and down form for Blackpool. They’re capable in recent games of winning against Brighton (3-1), but losing against West Ham (1-4), Derby (1-2) and Peterborough (1-3 – like us!). There’s no obvious pattern to their form, but in general their home form is much stronger than their away form. And remember that Blackpool have already beaten Reading once this season, perhaps slightly fortunately as Reading fell away rather in the second half. By all accounts the mid-week draw 3-3 versus Leicester was a pulsating match, and showed plenty of Blackpool grit and drive to thwart an attacking Leicester side...

Recent form table – last 8 games:
The new table has just been updated as I write this, and Reading sit neck and neck up the top of the current form table with Southampton (Saints have W6 D2 L0 and Reading W6 D1 L1), and Blackpool 11th with a W3 D2 L3 sequence. Bottom of this form table are now Barnsley, with just one win in 8.
If you’d like to see the complete current table, click here:

Current Manager of Blackpool: Ian Holloway (‘Ollie’)
Ian Scott Holloway (born 12 March 1963) is an English football manager and former player. He became the manager of Blackpool in May 2009. Holloway is well-known amongst football fans for his off-the-wall interviews, with a wide selection of quotes and sound bites being printed. Holloway's playing career spanned 18 years from 1981 to 1999. A midfielder, he began his career at hometown club Bristol Rovers in 1981, going on to play for Wimbledon, Brentford, Torquay Utd., (on loan), back to Bristol Rovers for a second spell, Queens Park Rangers and, finally, a third spell back at Bristol Rovers, where he became player-manager before ending his playing career in 1999. Before his current job as Blackpool manager, he had also previously managed QPR, Plymouth Argyle and Leicester City.

Here’s the boss himself, firstly being alert in real match situation, and then leading the celebrations as Blackpool gain promotion to the Premier league ... and sadly, some Blackpool fans are quick to forget these moment as Blackpool are currently by no means guaranteed a play-off spot this season.

Did you know? A quick Historical summary of Blackpool FC

Blackpool Football Club are an English football club founded in 1887 from the Lancashire seaside town of Blackpool. Blackpool Football Club were formed on 26 July 1887, after a merger with a breakaway group from the local St. John's Football Club. The club managed to win two pieces of silverware in its first season in existence, 1887–88: the Fylde Cup and the Lancashire Junior Cup.

At the conclusion of the following 1888–89 season, Blackpool became founder members of the Lancashire League. After struggling to repeat the success of the 1893–94 season, when they were Lancashire champions, the Blackpool board decided it was time to leave local football behind, so on 13 May 1896 the club became a limited company and applied for entry to the Football League. Their application was successful, and for the club's debut season, 1896–97, they joined the sixteen-team Second Division. They were not re-elected in 1899-99, but bounced back the following year.
Blackpool first played in their tangerine strip in the opening game of the 1923/24 season, a 2-2 draw with Oldham Athletic. They first made the First Division in 1930, and have spent 14 seasons at the top. From the 1970s they went downhill, and had to endure four seasons in the Fourth Division in the 1980s, but on a similar to Reading have had a gradual increase of fortunes in the last 20 years, culminating – for now at least – with a Premier League campaign last season. It’s therefore not surprising that they are solid challengers this time around in the Championship ...

Did you know? Blackpool Stats and Anecdotes

* Of the nine players who spent their entire career playing for the club, special mention for Reading fans should be made of Harry Johnston, who spent 21 years (1934-1955) there making 398 appearances, scoring 11 goals. In case the younger fans don’t know, Johnston later became Reading FC’s manager – staying at Elm Park seven seasons from 1955 to 1962.
* More on Harry Johnston – see RR’s Calendar section for the entry on 26th September: http://royalsrendezvous.co.uk/calendar/event/44771 and the RR article on him in the Historical section – http://royalsrendezvous.co.uk/topic/9461378/1 When he died, in his hometown of Manchester in 1973 at the age of only 54, contemporary reports said "the whole town of Blackpool mourned, for Harry Johnston was one of the greatest players ever to wear the tangerine shirt”.
* Blackpool hold the unique record for being the only club in English football to be promoted through all four divisions via the play-offs (see photo just below ...)..
* The first home game of the Premier campaign, against Fulham on 28th August 2010, had an attendance of 16,220, noteworthy for being the highest capacity at Bloomfield Road in thirty years.

WEB SITES

Official Blackpool FC Club Web Site:
http://www.blackpoolfc.co.uk

Unofficial Web Sites – daib0’s suggestions:
A dual recommendation this week – I am sure that there is space for two forums for moderately big teams, in much the same way that for Reading's Royals Rendezvous and the older HNA? can peacefully co-exist but it will take time to steady the ship in Blackpool's case. Why?
Because a new forum has just sprung up – Back Henry Street – and I have to say it looks very good indeed, although still very much a baby on the forum scene – less than a month old showing itself publicly! But strong organization and a neat, tidy and organized presentation. It’s also much similar in ideals to Royals Rendezvous I feel; invites banter, even from rival clubs, but only where there is no disruptive winding up intentions. A really good moderation team in place too, by the looks of it. They have over 200 members in less than a month – very impressive! Well worth a look in:
http://www.backhenrystreet.co.uk
And who is the other then? It’s Another View from the Tower – usually known in short as AVFTT which is the long-established forum, and is all sports based, without sub-sections, and obviously specializing in Blackpool topics, though like the Ipswich and Saints forums it's very likeable but all a bit of a jumble, and can be a bit of a pain if you want to go back and check topics from, let's say, one month ago. There's also a bit of a pro/contra Oyston crisis at the moment! I’ve sure been given perfect respect on there too, though perhaps they are bit unaccustomed to having other fans on ‘in peace’ - however, if you’d like to check them out you'll find many interesting threads too, so please go to: http://www.fansonline.net/blackpool/mb/index.php

OPPOSING FANS SECTION

Rivalries:
I originally understood, from another supposedly specialist site, that these are principally with –
1] Preston – the ‘West Lancashire’ derby 2] Burnley and 3] Tranmere – all fairly local opposition. But members on the AVFTT last December (before the birth of Back Henry Street) said things like “I can assure you mate, Tranmere are not even in our top 10 as rivals, never have been, never will be. Traditionally, Bolton, Preston and Burnley, but Blackburn are old rivals. Don't think we have any other rivals, maybe Man City.” So there you have it!

Famous Fans:
Some important media figures crop up –
Bill Beaumont – former rugby player and ‘Question of Sports’ participant, Mike Dickin – Talksport, Graham Kelly – former F.A. Boss. Blackpool fans – do please help us if there are more, this is probably the most difficult section of all to research! Should we include Sir Stanley Matthews, who apart from being a footballing legend always held Blackpool FC in his blood? I think we should, and here he is!

NICKNAMES ETC.
Here obviously ‘The Seasiders’ because the club is based on the coast, and has been a favourite British resort for more than a century; also the ‘Tangerines’, referring to the colour of their home kit.

MATCH DAY EXPECTATIONS

Attendances:
Reading’s average at home this season is 18,528, gradually moving upwards as fans respond to our successes. That figure puts us 10th in the Championship attendance charts, a whisker ahead of Birmingham and Ipswich, and a few hundred behind Hull in 9th. No change to top four – West Ham, Derby, Leeds and Southampton, in that order. And Leeds have the biggest away attendances too.

Squads and Team News:
Not available yet - please add any news in your posts and comments - one of the most important things to add here before kick-off!

SCORE PREDICTIONS

My own verdict:
I feel we’ll get a win, we’re at home and and surely tensed up, but it won’t be pretty:
Reading 2 Blackpool 1

For most of your predictions see:
http://royalsrendezvous.co.uk/topic/9463374/1 - Please do ADD your prediction on this special link, which counts for the RR Prediction Game 2011-12, being organized by RoyalJoe - couldn't be easier, and you'll have some fun, so try it even at this stage of the season ! If you don’t fancy participating in the game, but still would like to give a one-off score prediction, just leave any prediction on this Match thread itself (we don’t take these into account ...)

What do others say?
The Oddschecker site, listing nearly all the major betting companies, shows, in my opinion, too staggered a rating in favour of Reading much as I’d personally like to see it; we are 11/13 against, whilst Blackpool are at about 3/1 odds for the victory. A draw is about 5/2. I suppose that Reading’s super run havegiven the Bookies plenty of confidence in the team!

Reading FC SUPERSTITIONS
THIS DATE in history! Reading has been seen 17 times on this day, with a normal-like W7 D4 L6 outcome. We have never had more than a two-goal winning margin, but have suffered two bad defeats: 1-4 to Swansea (and at home!) in 1978, and 0-4 away at Plymouth in 1971. In 1990 we beat Fulham away 2-1, then didn’t play on this day until last time out – in 2010, when we also won 2-1, this time at home to Leicester City.
How do Blackpool do? They have played 16 times, and have an amazing record! Only two defeats, with 10 victories (leaving 4 drawn games). One defeat was bad – 0-4 away to QPR in 1973, but amongst many victories I’d mention 5-3 v Nottm Forest (H) way back in 1928. And the last three games have all produced wins: 4-1 v Cambridge 2002 (at the Millenium, Cardiff), 2-1 v Bournemouth (A) 2004, and most recently 3-1 v Bradford (A) in 2007.

Finally

Ref Check

Referee – Fred Graham
Assistant Referees (Linesmen) – Ian Cooper and Adam Nunn
4th Official – Justin Amey

Fred Graham is from Essex. His record this season:
Games – 40
Yellow cards – 106
Red cards – 4

Special game/s this season?
Yes, the very first game of the season – he got off to a worrying start in the Southend v Orient Carling Cup match (8th Aug 2011) where 7 yellows and a red came out of his pocket! Also in the Carling Cup, at the end of the same month he produced six yellows in the Southampton v Swindon match. Since then though he’s had things much easier – in the last 32 games he’s only shown 1 red. Another novelty, and I’m not sure why, he that he has taken charge of several Scottish League Division 3 games – most unusual for an ‘English’ ref!

Previous Reading matches:
November 2010 v Leeds Utd (H) – a 0-0 draw (7 yellow cards)
August 2010 v Scunthorpe (H) – a Reading loss 1-2 (2 yellows)
April 2010 v Newcastle (H) – a loss 1-2 (5 yellows)
January 2009 v Seansea (A) – a loss 0-2 (2 yellows)

Previous Blackpool matches:
November 2011 v Birmingham (H) – a 2-2 draw (1 yellow card)
February 2008 v Ipswich (A) – a Blackpool loss 1-2 (NO cards)

Comments:
Good ratings from Preston (“Experienced Ref. he controlled the game without any fuss. Fair decisions both ways. Only thing he missed young kid Middleton was crunched by Watford LB. who recieved high fives from his team mates, while the young lad was on the all fours.”), Watford, Oldham, Swindon fans, only bad rating from QPR.
As proof of what I’m saying, read this thread dedicated to his refereeing of an Ipswich v Blackpool game where he also receives lavish praises, almost unknown when talking about refs! He gives me good vibrations … http://s8.zetaboards.com/ratetheref/topic/71241/1

Biographical Note:
Fred Graham is an English football referee who generally officiates in the Football League. He is based in Stanford-Le-Hope in Essex. He was born in March 1964 and is a referee since 1988. Refereeing his first Football League game at Notts County on the first day of season 2004/05, his most notable appointment to date came on 21 May 2010 when he refereed a League Two play-off semi-final game at Rotherham United. He was also the 4th official on 29 May 2010 at the League One play-off final at Wembley.

Here’s a fine article about him, where you read read of his hopes, and also a pic attached:

News on Jason Roberts

Roberts to have scan ahead of Blackpool clash. Reading are hoping Jason Roberts’ hamstring problem will not rule him out of Saturday’s home game against Blackpool.

Royals’ 34-year-old striker limped off midway through the second half of last night’s 3-1 defeat at Peterborough. Roberts, who was one of the better players during a dismal evening in Cambridgeshire, tweeted last night that he would be having a scan.

Brian McDermott said: “He has got some kind of hamstring problem and we will have a look at it. We are hopeful we have got it in time.”

Royals’ boss refused to dwell on the the club’s first defeat in 11 Championship matches. He said: “In our last 20-odd games we have won something like 17. At one stage we were 18 or 20 points behind the top two. We are second in the league. I cannot fault the players because they have been terrific.”

NOEL HUNT says -

Hunt looks for Blackpool backlash after Peterborough blip

Noel Hunt dismissed Reading’s shock 3-1 defeat at Peterborough United last night as a one-off and promised that the club will bounce back at home to Blackpool on Saturday. Royals took the lead through Hunt in the 20th minute only to concede first-half goals to George Boyd and Tyronne Barnett before Paul Taylor secured Posh’s win eight minutes from time.

Hunt, whose seventh goal this season makes him Royals’ joint-top scorer with Adam Le Fondre, said: “We gave away two sloppy goals from set-pieces and that killed us. That’s not us and we will work on it. It’s nothing major and we just need to tweak some things so it won’t happen again. We’re all disappointed. They had all their men in front of the ball in the second half and we were battering them. There are always going to be times when you concede at set-pieces, but the boys at the back have been magnificent for most of the season. Our defending has been exceptional for the past six months and we will get back to that on Saturday against Blackpool. It’s a big game and we need to get another run going again.”

Reading remain in second spot as closest rivals West Ham were held 1-1 at home to Middlesbrough. Hunt is hoping that Royals will respond well to suffering just their sixth away defeat of the season. He added:
“It could be the kick in the bum that we need. Peterborough had 10 men behind the ball and there was no room in the box. We need to work around that and Saturday is a new start.”

And although Hunt netted the 200th goal during McDermott’s reign, he said: “That stat is good, but I’m gutted for the manager, who has been a revelation for this club since he came in. It doesn’t count for anything if you don’t win. We have to buck up our ideas for Saturday.”

Blackpool - Evatt’s twin targets

IAN Evatt is targeting a perfect week – wins over Leicester and Reading and becoming a dad. Evatt’s immediate priority is beating the Foxes at Bloomfield Road tonight to maintain Blackpool’s place in the top six. But in what is set to be a whirlwind week, the centre-half’s next appointment will be at hospital on Friday, when his wife is due to give birth to twins. Then, so the plan goes, he will travel to Reading on his own and tell manager Ian Holloway he is available to play at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

The 30-year-old said: “It is going to be a big few days for both me and the team. I’m going to have my hands full. What is nice is that the week started off on a high with the win against Brighton. We needed that – the whole place needed it after all the negativity that has been flying around the club in recent times. But you write this group of lads off at your peril because we just keep coming back from adversity. We love showing people what we can do. We have nine games left and we all believe we are good enough win promotion. That’s what we’re aiming for.”

Evatt’s big week couldn’t have got off to a better start – not only claiming three points against the Seagulls but also notching his first goal of the season. It was his first strike since the Premier League encounter at Bolton in November 2010.

“I was delighted but it’s about time, isn’t it?” smiled the centre-back. “I should be getting more goals, especially for my height, but it was nice to score from open play, which is strange for me. I was venturing forward quite a few times during the game and I could see they weren’t really following me into the box. The gaffer has been on at me to go forward like I did when we were previously in the Championship. I managed to get a few goals that season (four) and it is nice to get off the mark. Stephen Crainey put the ball in, no-one tracked me and it fell to me in the box. I just tapped it in. “It wasn’t exactly a 30-yarder but they all count. It was a great feeling to get the boys back in the game at 1-1 and to go on and win it.”

Evatt is the only centre-half at the club who looks comfortable pushing forward and it is something his manager will continue asking him to do. Holloway said:

“We mustn’t forget our attacking instincts. Evatt played the initial pass, carried on going forward and scored. That is what I want. I want us to be impossible to mark. I want us to be different, to play with gusto and attack. I promised it when I first came here and that’s what I’ll keep doing, no matter what people say.”

Keep your spirits up lads, we've got backing out there ...

Club Call

Promotion hopes boost

Barry Fry watched Posh demolish Reading 3-1 but then declared: "The Royals will be promoted automatically with Southampton."

Fry told deadcertsdaily: "We've played all the top teams now and Southampton are the best of them. I fancy them to go up as champions but despite us beating the Royals I can't see they will be in trouble for the second place."

He added: "They [Reading] still have to go to Southampton and West Ham so it's in their hands. I really do think they will fill the other automatic spot and that West Ham will have to settle for the play-offs."

He added: "I think they [West Ham] can win through from the play-offs but only if Sam Allardyce plays two up. He's gone with a big man all season and last night when Carlton Cole came off he shoved John Carew on.

Meanwhile, a bit more info on Blackpool's game (Wednesday - today) with Leicester

bwinbetting
Back a Bloomfield Road goalfest for Blackpool v Leicester

Tonight’s meeting between Blackpool and Leicester at Bloomfield Road is crucial in the context of the two teams’ promotion bids. The Seasiders are well in the shake up with nine games remaining although anything but a win for the Foxes will probably rule them out of the running this season given their position eight points off sixth place. So there is arguably more riding on this match for Leicester this evening although it is the home side who are 27/20 favourites to win the match in bwin’s 3Way football betting market. This leaves the away side at 37/20 and the draw at 23/10.

The Championship promotion race is filled with teams who are underperforming and Blackpool are no exception – they have picked up just two wins in their last six league fixtures. Luckily for them, the sides around them have also been slipping up. It has been the home form of the Tangerines that has really pushed them into the promotion mix with just one defeat in their last 11 games, and that came against West Ham by four goals to one. But even allowing for their strong home form, the last six games at Bloomfield Road have seen both teams score and that eventuality can be backed at 57/100.

Leicester were favourites for promotion at the start of the season but a difficult campaign has seen them left in 12th place in the Championship table. They have lost two of their last three Championship matches (both away from home), conceding three goals in both. Looking further back, the Foxes have lost four of their last five matches on the road and have only won five away games all season. While the 3Way football betting market reflects this is a close game to call, this should not be too much of a concern for punters as one thing should be guaranteed – goals.

Both sides always seem much more intent on scoring than defending and this points to two potential bets – over 2.5 goals to be scored is 3/4 and over 3.5 goals is a 9/5 chance.

Blackpool Gazette
Blackpool v Leicester - match preview

LEICESTER and Ian Holloway go together like chalk and cheese, or Shane McGowan and dentists. The problems started in 2006, when Holloway was sent on gardening leave by QPR after being heavily linked with the Foxes’ managerial post. Rob Kelly got the Leicester job and, after four months out of the game, Holloway took over at Plymouth. A year or so later, Leicester came calling again and Holloway forced the move through by resigning from Argyle.

The dream job turned out to be more of a nightmare, though, with the Foxes winning nine out of 32 games under Holloway and slipping out of the Championship on the final day of the season. Holloway left the club and had to wait a full 12 months before Blackpool invited him back into the game. At the seaside, he has rebuilt his reputation and proved himself a terrific manager ... but he’s still having no luck when it comes to Leicester.

He has lost each of his three games against the Foxes as Pool boss, and after the 2-1 reverse at the Walker’s Stadium in November he remarked: “If I bought every ticket in the raffle I still wouldn’t win here. It was another disappointing night at this ground and I’ve had far too many here.”

Whether or not Holloway can break his duck tonight remains to be seen against a dangerous Leicester side that is inconsistent but brilliant on its day.

Had we come away from Peterborough with three points I would be saying "it would be nice to beat Blackpool on Saturday".

Now, if we are to have any real chance of auto's I have to say "every game is now a must win game".

I just hope last night was a blip and we can get back to winning ways, starting on Saturday. I don't want to have to start relying on West Hams results to benefit us.

I have now officially given up my belief that Southampton will slip up. They may be a two man team but all credit to them for just going on and on and on!

A thousand miles away, but just round the corner in spirit
West Ham fans look at the table seeing we are still two points in front and thinking "we've got a game in hand, but we're drawing so many - it doesn't look very good ..."
