WELCOME TO ROYALS RENDEZVOUS - THE 1871 CLUB

The Royals Rendezvous – the 1871 Club was formed over the Christmas-New Year period of 2010-2011. Many of its initial members were regular contributors to the BBC 606 service – alas, no longer in operation – who wished for a more specialized Reading FC orientated forum, whilst maintaining the good spirited type of conversation and banter that the BBC tried to promote.

In its first two years of existence, the Royals Rendezvous is achieving outstanding success, with new members signing up continuously, and the member base itself extremely active. Over 500 members, over 70,000 posts is proof enough of the growing role of this specialist Reading FC fans forum web site. It is already recognized in other sporting circles as a major source of news and fan interaction (especially that related to Reading Football club of course), and has a strong and enthusiastic moderation team.

Royals Rendezvous has also developed fine relations with many other specialist football forums, especially with teams of our own league.

You’re currently viewing our forum as a guest. This means you are limited to certain areas of the board and there are many features you cannot use.

However, if you are a fan of another team you are currently allowed to post in “Rivals, but Friends” and the "Other Matches" sections, strictly abiding by the language decency standards that Royals Rendezvous maintains. No aggressive posts, wind-ups or swearing or the post will be edited/deleted. But please read on....

Player Performances v Brighton Dec 11; plus match reports

Good evening all,

First of all, a very merry Christmas to you all, I hope you have all had a relaxing time with your families and friends, ate and/or drank too much and received nice gifts. Personally I enjoy this time of the year, and one thing that has become a fixture in my life since an early age is the tradition of the Boxing Day match. However, this year was the first year I actually went to a Boxing Game match in person, and it made this Christmas extra special.

Great atmosphere being at the Mad Stad for the first time this season, probably the most packed I have seen it for a while, which should keep SJM quiet for a bit hopefully. The first half was an enjoyable affair, although some close moments from Brighton did produce some scares. The second we slacked off a bit, but managed to keep the opposition at bay due to some good moments from our central midfield and defence.

But this is not a match report. I wanted to draw attention to some player performances I noticed today, good and bad.

Jimmy Kebe

I begin with probably public enemy number one right now. I have heard so much talk over the past few months regarding his contract negotiations and poor performance. I was hoping he would strive to become an asset again now he needs to find a club, but today, particularly in the second half when he was playing right in front of me, I came to the realization that he would rather be somewhere else, that he couldn't really be bothered to be playing. There were three or four moments in the game when, had he been his old self and used his pace, he could have presented a real danger to the opposition, but, unfortunately, he didn't show himself to be that useful to us today.

Verdict: Antonio should have come on much sooner than he did, given more of a chance to have an impact in the game.

Jobi McAnuff

In contrast to his fellow winger, McAnuff proved to finally being able to handle the dual task of being a captain and player at the same time. His pace is nowhere near Kebes, but, combined with his technical skill, he is a dangerous player, and gave Brighton certainly enough to handle, as well as showing Shane Long-esque determination in holding our lead until the end. He is certainly a contender for man of the match for me, although he did tire out toward the end, but, given what he had done for us in the game, I couldn't fault him on this.

Verdict: His performance was nothing short of inspirational, and that is exactly what is required from a club captain.

Jem Karacan

I finally come to Jem Karacan, who is my other contender for man of the match. He showed determination and good skill in preventing Brighton from getting much on the ball, as well as giving good support to the attacking areas of the team. He is a player I have always admired as he has risen from our youth ranks, and is proving to be full of potential and skill. He is one who we should endeavour to keep hold of.

Verdict: My favourite for MOTM, he really showed himself to be a true professional today and, if he plays the same every match, we, excuse the pun, have a real gem of a player at this club.

Anyway, that's what I took away from the game today. Thoughts?

I wasn't there, but that's exactly the sort of analysis we welcome on RR. Sounds very solid to me, but look forward to hearing the opinions of those who were lucky enough to be at the Mad Stad today ...

Kebe seemed to be set on slowing everything down against Brighton, which was frustrating, but did set up 2 goals so not a bad days work for a winger, and an effort cleared off the line.

Federici went about his work very nicely claiming a lot of crosses when our defence started to struggle.

Pearce was impressive aswell, but I agree Jobi and Jems work rate really stood out.

I thought Cummings struggled, getting beaten to easy, but we can forgive him for a rare off game.

Kebe put a shift in for the first half as Urz_AL mentioned but seemed content to try and waste time in the second - though he was trying to help out Cummings against Lua Lua before he was subbed.

McAnuff was brilliant: always willing to take on his man and even drifted in field to pick up the play. I noticed he never stopped calling for the ball!

Ledge and Jem were both solid though the former gave up possession cheaply once or twice. Both kept running in defense and attack which is all that can be asked of them given how we play.

Both Griff and Cummings struggled at times against the pace of Brighton's wingers but didn't make any glaring errors. Shaun possibly let a few too many crosses in but fortunately our opponents couldn't capitalise!

The strikers worked hard in making runs and trying to hold up the ball but they seemed too isolated from the rest of the team. Lord knows why we keep hoofing the ball the Church and expect him to beat the centre back in the air - that's not his strength at all.

Agree with all 3 assessments. Me and people around me were screaming at Jimmy to take the full back on and run at thier defence, but in the second half he seemed content to just stand around, wait for Cummings to arrive and pass to him, and the opportunity to get into the box was lost. Mcanuff gave their right-back a torrid time, and Karacan put in a very determined performance, making several important tackles, supporting the attack and just generally making a nuisance of himself all over the pitch.

these comments are great, lads, for those like myself who know the style of every player, but are not on the spot ...
if Number_13 doesn't mind I'll add "v Brighton Dec 11" to the topic title, so that it might encourage some of you to repeat this appraisal in forthcoming games?! Would be a terrific addition in my opinion. ;) :)

If it could get going, would you prefer it in 'Match Threads' section (my choice I think) or here in RFC talk (where it is now)? Up to you ..... !
And if any RR member who is a regular attender would like to take responsibility for putting up the first post each time, even if he/she misses some matches (doesn't matter), please let us know!! I'm sure this could become a popular section, sort of 'post-match' ...

No problem at all daibo, you go right ahead! It's a good idea for player analysis, personally I would do it every game if I could but I can rarely make it there so I don't think I could give a fair view of an overall performance but I will certainly do more in the future to games that I attend...watch this space!

Great! Whenever anyone can. I do believe this would be better in 'Match' Section though, because the title already is "RFC Match Threads/Match Reports" as it'll get eaten up amomngst SO many topics in the normal RFC section. So I'll cautiously move this over now, and hope it's to your liking (get back if not) ...

Here's a little contribution from Vital Football -

"Reading manager Brian McDermott has praised Jobi McAnuff's role as captain so far, saying he is getting even stronger in that position, following his fine display yesterday in the 3-0 win over Brighton.

The 30-year old scored a brace, while putting in a decent team display. He was appointed as captain following Ivar Ingimarsson's departure last season, which has been questioned by some Royals supporters.

McDermott told the official RFC site: 'Early on in the season there were question marks from others - not from me - about him as a skipper, but he's growing and is really important in the dressing room to the players, the staff, and me. I thought he was outstanding.' "
