WELCOME TO ROYALS RENDEZVOUS - THE 1871 CLUB

The Royals Rendezvous – the 1871 Club was formed over the Christmas-New Year period of 2010-2011. Many of its initial members were regular contributors to the BBC 606 service – alas, no longer in operation – who wished for a more specialized Reading FC orientated forum, whilst maintaining the good spirited type of conversation and banter that the BBC tried to promote.

In its first two years of existence, the Royals Rendezvous is achieving outstanding success, with new members signing up continuously, and the member base itself extremely active. Over 500 members, over 70,000 posts is proof enough of the growing role of this specialist Reading FC fans forum web site. It is already recognized in other sporting circles as a major source of news and fan interaction (especially that related to Reading Football club of course), and has a strong and enthusiastic moderation team.

Royals Rendezvous has also developed fine relations with many other specialist football forums, especially with teams of our own league.

You’re currently viewing our forum as a guest. This means you are limited to certain areas of the board and there are many features you cannot use.

However, if you are a fan of another team you are currently allowed to post in “Rivals, but Friends” and the "Other Matches" sections, strictly abiding by the language decency standards that Royals Rendezvous maintains. No aggressive posts, wind-ups or swearing or the post will be edited/deleted. But please read on....

Will this hamper England's efforts?

BBC Sport -

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister has told the BBC he is "surprised" by England's decision to base themselves in Poland for Euro 2012, despite playing their group matches in Ukraine. Borys Kolesnikov said it would benefit England's opponents as the team would have to travel thousands of miles.

"We are surprised by the decision but it will be easier for us," he said. And Ukraine's UK ambassador, Volodymyr Khandogiy, added: "From my point of view it's not logical." Deputy PM Kolesnikov invited England manager Fabio Capello to consider swapping the team's planned base in Krakow for an alternative across the border. "The coach of the France national team Laurent Blanc is visiting Donetsk [to find a training camp], and everyone knows our bases are among the best in Europe," he said.

However, the Football Association has insisted England will not change their training base despite facing journeys of 930 miles to Donetsk, twice, and 540 miles to Kiev from Krakow.

The UEFA Referees Committee, meeting in Nyon today, has appointed the 12 referees to handle the 31 matches at next year's UEFA EURO 2012 final tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

For the first time in the history of the UEFA European Championship, the referees will have added support thanks to a decision by football's lawmakers, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), to allow the continuation of the experiment in the use of additional assistant referees. The full referee teams will be announced in due course.

The UEFA EURO 2012 main referees are:
Cüneyt Çakır (TUR)
Jonas Eriksson (SWE)
Viktor Kassai (HUN)
Bjorn Kuipers (NED)
Stéphane Lannoy (FRA)
Pedro Proença (POR)
Nicola Rizzoli (ITA)
Damir Skomina (SVN)
Wolfgang Stark (GER)
Craig Thomson (SCO)
Carlos Velasco Carballo (ESP)
Howard Webb (ENG)

In addition, four fourth officials who will only act in this specific function have been appointed. The quartet are:
Marcin Borski (POL)
Tom Harald Hagen (NOR)
Pavel Královec (CZE)
Viktor Shvetsov (UKR)

The preparations of the referees for UEFA EURO 2012 will include various courses and training activities, including:

• 30 January to 2 February – UEFA's winter annual course during which the referees will receive technical instructions as well as physical training plans to follow until the final tournament.

• 30 April to 3 May – Referees' preparatory workshop in Warsaw. The referee quintets will train together in their team base camp. They will also undergo fitness tests and review the application of the technical instructions they have received.

• 4 June – The referee teams will arrive in Warsaw for the final tournament.

The National Bank of Ukraine, the sole authority responsible for issuing money in Ukraine, has released a series of commemorative coins for UEFA EURO 2012.

There are 12 coins in the series. Eleven coins in gold, silver and nickel silver have been officially put into circulation, and a coin with a face value of one hryvnia will be issued in early 2012.

Based on a licensing agreement with UEFA, the coins are officially licensed products for UEFA EURO 2012 and feature the official design marks of the event.

The National Bank of Ukraine has produced up to 500 gold coins which have a face value of 500 hryvnia, a holographic image of the official UEFA EURO 2012 logo made using colour enamels and weigh 500g.

Commemorative coins with a face value of 20 hryvnia, featuring a holographic image of the official UEFA EURO 2012 logo, as well as ten hryvnia silver coins dedicated to each of the four Ukrainian host cities – Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Lviv – have also been produced.

The National Bank of Ukraine will use the same design for 100,000 coins made of nickel silver with a face value of five hryvnia.

The Polish government agency PL.2012 has launched an innovative project to make life easier for football fans visiting the country during UEFA EURO 2012.

The Polish Guide website – polishguide2012.pl – offers those planning trips detailed information about Poland and its four UEFA EURO 2012 host cities, Gdansk, Poznan, Warsaw and Wroclaw. Besides information about the stadiums, fan zones, team base camps, and security and safety, the website also provides a transport guide.

Anyone using the website can tailor this information to suit the needs of their trip via a personalised Your Guide information service which will also be accessible on mobile devices.

The other significant feature of the Polish Guide website is the Polish Pass which can be purchased online and is designed to help visitors book travel tickets and accommodation. It includes integrated tickets for local transport as well as national rail services and should help holders with hotel and flight bookings. More information is available on the website.

"After purchasing the Polish Pass you will be able to book a hotel or buy a ticket for transportation in the host cities," said Dominiki Jung, project coordinator for Polish Pass at PL.2012. "Additionally the holder of the Polish Pass will be able to buy train or flight tickets, both domestic and international."

Once bought, the Polish Pass can be printed out at home and is valid with a passport.

The Polish Guide website has been launched in Polish and English though this will be expanded in the coming days to incorporate German, French, Spanish and Russian language sections.

Wojciech Folejewski, operations director at PL.2012, explained that the service could be customised for each visitor, and would be available on mobile phones. "In the new year we will launch a new functionality called customised scheduler," said Folejewski. "Everyone will be able to set their own plan for travel, events and locations.

"Before the tournament we will additionally launch the service on mobile devices. This will be a useful and comfortable solution for foreign visitors travelling in Poland."

Volunteers

Between June and October 2011, a competition record 23,965 people hailing from 142 countries submitted applications for the 5,500 positions. The interview process was completed last week, with one girl travelling from Australia for hers, and the roster will be finalised by the end of the year. Training has already begun, though, and 270 volunteers will assist at the final tournament draw.

Next step: Training

Around 5,500 volunteers will support UEFA's full-time staff in 20 areas of operation and will work at official UEFA EURO 2012 sites such as stadiums, airports and hotels. Names will be finalised by the end of the year and successful applicants will undergo training from 21 November to May 2012, encompassing a general programme and job-specific instructions. Some 270 will assist at the final tournament draw in Kyiv on 2 December.

From the Official EUFA page -

Best EURO performance: third 1968, semi-finals 1996
Coach: Fabio Capello
Leading scorer: all-time – Bobby Charlton (49); current – Michael Owen (40)
Most appearances: all-time – Peter Shilton (125); current – David Beckham (115)
Association formed: 1863
Nickname: Three Lions

England enter UEFA EURO 2012 having missed out on the last European finals under Steve McClaren, Fabio Capello's predecessor. England finished third behind Croatia and Russia in their UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying group, and they will also want to improve on their first major tournament showing, under Capello himself at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. England won just once in South Africa before exiting with their heaviest World Cup defeat, 4-1 against Germany in the last 16. Qualification for this tournament went smoothly, however, Capello's men topping their group with an unbeaten record.

UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying
Group G: winners
Leading scorer: Darren Bent, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young (3)
Ever-presents: Joe Hart, Ashley Cole (8)

England comfortably booked their place in Poland and Ukraine, finishing six points clear at the top of Group G. Ever-present goalkeeper Joe Hart kept five clean sheets, while at the other end the goalscoring duties were shared around as England finished with four players level on three strikes.

England reached a milestone against Montenegro in their final qualifying fixture. The match in Podgorica, which finished 2-2 and secured England's qualification, was considered the 900th match in their history. They had previously played 897 completed internationals, plus two that were abandoned.

England's game against Wales at the Millennium Stadium was the 100th time that the two nations had met. England recorded their 65th victory against their neighbours, adding the 66th in the return fixture at Wembley in September. Ashley Cole, now capped 93 times, surpassed Gary Neville's record of 85 outfield appearances without a goal during the campaign.

"Our goal was to qualify first in the group; we have qualified and we'll play the EURO so we are happy," said manager Capello after the closing draw against second-placed Montenegro.

EURO pedigree
England have not taken part in this tournament since 2004 thanks to their failure in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying. Home and away losses to Slaven Bilić's Croatia and a defeat by Russia in Moscow proved costly as Steve McClaren's men finished third behind their conquerors.

England's overall UEFA European Championship record is a tale of disappointment. Their 2008 setback was the fifth time they had failed to reach the finals, and they have had just two semi-final places (1968, 1996) from the seven final tournaments for which they have qualified.

To underline the point, England head to Poland and Ukraine as the only European winners of the World Cup who have not yet lifted the Henri Delaunay Cup. Italy (1968), Germany (1972, 1980, 1996), France (1984, 2000) and current holders Spain (1964, 2008) have all done so, but England have yet to reach the final of the competition.

UEFA EURO 2012 Group D fixtures

Friday 15 June: Sweden v England, 20.45CET, Kyiv
Tuesday 19 June: England v Ukraine, 20.45CET, Donetsk

Sports News Ireland
Hunt dreams of Euro call up
Reading striker Noel Hunt still harbours hopes of making a late push for the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2012. The 29 year old former Dunfermline striker has scored seven Reading to take them to second in the table and he is hoping that promotion to the Premier League could catapult him straight into Giovanni Trapattoni’s thinking.

“All I have got to do is concentrate on Reading and getting us to the Premier League,” Hunt toldskysports.com. “That’s the big thing and hopefully if I can continue to do that in the manner that I am doing you just never know, there might be a space for me. You always have to hope and still think you have got a chance and that is what I am doing so I am just concentrating on getting things right for Reading.”

The burly forward has won four caps for Ireland previously and is believes he is in the form of his life.

“I am playing well at the moment,” added Hunt. “I am probably the fittest I have ever been and Brian [McDermott] has me playing in a good role in the team and I would like to think I am helping the boys out. I can say from my point of view I am playing the best I have been playing, really helping the team out which I hope everyone sees. It’s been fantastic and hopefully if that keeps going you never know. Hopefully they [Republic of Ireland coaching team] are watching and keeping an eye on all the results and games and you never know what might happen. You can never say never in this sport so obviously I will just keep doing what I am doing for Reading, working my socks off and giving everything. I will work as hard as I can for the team, for myself and the manager and hopefully we will see what happens after that.”

Should Hunt achieve his ultimate dream of making the Euro’s squad he could link up with his brother Stephen with the Wolves star already an important member of Trap’s squad

“He [Stephen] has been flying the last few years since leaving Reading and obviously I am sure he will be a big part of the squad and hopefully we can meet up again at the Euros as it would be another dream come true, ” noted Hunt.
