WELCOME TO ROYALS RENDEZVOUS - THE 1871 CLUB

The Royals Rendezvous – the 1871 Club was formed over the Christmas-New Year period of 2010-2011. Many of its initial members were regular contributors to the BBC 606 service – alas, no longer in operation – who wished for a more specialized Reading FC orientated forum, whilst maintaining the good spirited type of conversation and banter that the BBC tried to promote.

In its first two years of existence, the Royals Rendezvous is achieving outstanding success, with new members signing up continuously, and the member base itself extremely active. Over 500 members, over 70,000 posts is proof enough of the growing role of this specialist Reading FC fans forum web site. It is already recognized in other sporting circles as a major source of news and fan interaction (especially that related to Reading Football club of course), and has a strong and enthusiastic moderation team.

Royals Rendezvous has also developed fine relations with many other specialist football forums, especially with teams of our own league.

BBC News

Two UK journalists were labelled "spies" after a militia in Libya confused the Welsh language with Hebrew. Gareth Montgomery-Johnson, from Carmarthen, and Nicholas Davies-Jones, from Berkshire, were picked up by the Misrata Brigade in Tripoli last month. They were carrying medical supplies which had Welsh words printed on them. Mr Montgomery-Johnson told the BBC: "They thought this was Hebrew and we were Israeli spies."

The men had been working for the Iranian broadcaster Press TV, when the militia detained them on 22 February. They were accused of entering the country illegally. On March 14 they were handed over to the interior ministry after apologising for their actions. They flew back the the UK on Monday night. Speaking to Victoria Derbyshire on BBC 5Live, Mr Davies-Jones said: "It's a lot to take in." Mr Montgomery-Johnson said it felt "good" and was "overwhelmed. We're pleased to be back with our own families because they've been through a similar ordeal," he said. "While we were there we were given no information at all. Now we're overwhelmed and thankful."

Before they were detained by the militia, the pair were "dancing", "having a good time" and had been filming the local council and mosque. But around two hours after the pair were taken they realised they were "in trouble". Mr Davies-Jones said some of the men were carrying weapons and others did not. They were kept in military barracks in the centre of Tripoli.

Five days after they had been taken, some of the men went to the men's hotel and picked up their filming equipment and began going through archive material. Mr Montgomery-Johnson said: "My father, who's a nurse, had given me some bandages in case we got into trouble. Some had Welsh written on and they thought this was Hebrew and we were Israeli spies." Mr Montgomery-Johnson said they were kept in cramped conditions. "It was a small room 3m by 3m," he said. "The conditions were not good at all. I don't know how much I can say." Both men had been in regular communication with contacts across Libya but said "some militias keep misbehaving".

During the time the men were held, the UK embassy in Tripoli said it was following developments closely and was providing full consular support.

Well over a year later -

Deadly clashes after Libya protest

At least 11 people have died in Benghazi in Eastern Libya, in clashes that erupted during protests outside a militia headquarters, the army says. As many as 58 people were also wounded in the violence, a spokesman said. Demonstrators had gathered outside the headquarters of the Libya Shield brigade demanding the disbanding of militias, residents say.

Since Col Gaddafi's death in 2011, the government has been trying to tackle the presence of armed militias. The Libya Shield brigade, which played a role in the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi, has so far refused to lay down its weapons. The militia say they are operating with defence ministry approval.

One witness said he had seen around 200 protesters from an area to the east of Benghazi. While most of them were unarmed, a few had AK-47 rifles, he said. "When I was there I didn't see any of the people use them." The demonstrators were demanding the brigade leave its premises, army spokesman Abdallah Al-Shaafi told the BBC. "There is a special force now that will be deployed," he adds.
