It was the infamous play-off final of the then Division 1 championship: Reading v Bolton. Reading 2-0 up, coasting, and were awarded a penalty which surely would have killed the game off. But … despair – it was duly missed, aargh!; it let Bolton back into the game, and they finally won 4-3 much to our great despair. What made the occasion even more sour was that despite Reading FC finishing runners-up in the second tier, this was the only time in living memory that the second team has not achieved automatic promotion.
